eBay Opens First Global Capability Centre in Bengaluru

American e-commerce giant eBay has officially unveiled its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India, choosing Bengaluru over Hyderabad for its rich talent pool, diversity, and innovation ecosystem.

Spanning approximately 65,000 square feet, the new office will host key functions such as technology and engineering, AI/ML, applied research, product development, product management, and data analytics. The centre is expected to employ more than 300 engineers, making it a strategic innovation hub for eBay alongside its centres in the U.S. and China.

Why Bengaluru Over Hyderabad?

Mazen Rawashdeh, SVP & Chief Technology Officer at eBay, highlighted Bengaluru’s world-class talent as the decisive factor.

“The talent in India, in general, is amazing. We were debating between Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and we decided on Bengaluru as the quality and diversity of the talent is really attractive here,” Rawashdeh told The Hindu.

“We want to open and expand our presence with the dev centre and attract top talent. It’s a world-class tier-1 tech dev centre for us.”

Strategic Role Beyond Support

Unlike eBay’s earlier operations in India, which focused on supporting external functions, the new GCC will have a semi-autonomous role. Teams will build, incubate, and architect services across engineering, design, and product development, rather than acting as a back-end support unit.

“This is a 180-degree shift from our previous stint in India,” Rawashdeh explained. “We never exited India completely, but this time our strategy is completely different.”

Collaboration with Academia & Government

eBay also plans to collaborate with universities and government bodies, similar to its partnerships in the U.S. The goal is to create a strong R&D pipeline by working with PhD students and researchers, leveraging their expertise for joint innovation projects.

“We intend to build those relationships, especially with universities from a research and development angle. That would be a great pipeline to not only bring talent to the organization, but also leverage the tremendous knowledge and experience,” Rawashdeh said.
