Tectonic Shift in India’s Tech Hiring: GCCs Outpace IT Services

India’s technology employment landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are now hiring at a pace far exceeding that of traditional IT services companies, marking what experts describe as the sharpest employment shift in the sector in over a decade.
GCC Hiring Accelerates Rapidly
According to data cited in the report, GCCs are expanding their workforce at a year-on-year growth rate of 18–27%, compared to 4–6% growth in IT services. This means GCCs are hiring three to four times faster than IT services firms, reflecting a fundamental change in hiring demand.
Headcount and Job Creation Trends
The total workforce employed by GCCs has grown substantially—from 1.2 million in 2022 to approximately 2 million by 2025. On an annual basis, GCCs are adding between 600,000 and 700,000 jobs, while IT services companies are creating only 25,000 to 40,000 jobs per year on a net basis.
Net Tech Jobs in FY25
In financial year 2025, GCCs are expected to add more than 100,000 net new tech jobs, compared to roughly 20,000 jobs added by IT services firms. During FY24 and FY25 combined, GCCs accounted for nearly 100,000 of the 120,000 net new tech jobs, highlighting their growing dominance in tech employment.
Skills Driving GCC Demand
GCC hiring demand is concentrated in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and product engineering. These roles require deeper domain expertise and are increasingly being built in-house by global companies rather than outsourced.
Shift Toward In-House Capabilities
Global enterprises are internalising key digital functions through GCCs, moving away from traditional outsourcing models. This shift prioritises high-skill, multidisciplinary teams focused on ownership, speed, security, and domain depth.
GCC Expansion Across India
India currently hosts over 1,700 GCCs, with 90 or more new centres added in 2025. In addition, more than 150 existing GCCs have expanded operations during the same period, reinforcing their role as long-term innovation and delivery hubs.
Gap Between GCCs and IT Services
While IT services companies continue to employ a larger total workforce, their hiring growth has slowed significantly. Industry leaders note that although the gap is narrowing in absolute headcount, GCCs are emerging as the primary drivers of new tech job creation in India.
Conclusion
The data clearly indicates a structural shift in India’s IT employment model. With faster hiring, higher-skilled roles, and expanding in-house capabilities, GCCs are reshaping the future of technology employment, while traditional IT services firms experience more muted growth.
