Hitachi Energy Technology Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Switzerland-based Hitachi Energy Ltd, has announced an investment of ₹2,000 crore to expand its Global Technology and Innovation Centre in Chennai. The expansion will create 3,000 high-value technology jobs, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading hub for engineering and R&D.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and Industries Minister T. R. B. Rajaa met Hitachi Energy’s top leadership to finalise the project. “A proposed investment of up to ₹2,000 crore will create up to 3,000 new jobs — all high-value, high-paying, hi-tech roles,” said Rajaa.
Driving Global Projects from Chennai
The existing Global Technology and Innovation Centre spans 300,000 sq. ft., including 50,000 sq. ft. of dedicated laboratory space, and employs over 2,500 energy transition technologists. These experts—many with post-doctorate, doctorate, and postgraduate qualifications—specialise in grid automation, high-voltage systems, transformers, and grid integration.
Designed as a self-sufficient infrastructure, the centre supports end-to-end business models and currently drives 1,000+ global projects across 46 countries. “In just two years, Hitachi Energy is expanding again—highlighting Tamil Nadu’s deep talent pool and innovation strength,” Rajaa added.
Boosting Tamil Nadu’s R&D Ecosystem
Tamil Nadu accounts for over 15% of India’s doctorates and 11% of postgraduates, making it a prime destination for innovation-driven investments. “Every reinvestment and expansion underscores our unmatched talent and pro-business environment,” said Rajaa.
The Chennai hub consolidates Hitachi Energy’s global engineering, R&D, and digital capabilities—spanning project management, supply chain, cybersecurity, system studies, and remote services—and plays a pivotal role in delivering projects for Hitachi Energy entities worldwide.
By reinforcing its Chennai base, Hitachi Energy is doubling down on India’s growing importance in the global energy transformation and strengthening its role as a strategic global hub for innovation and technology development.
