India Sees Significant Growth in Mid-Market Global Capability Centres (GCCs)

India is witnessing a notable surge in mid-market Global Capability Centres (GCCs), marking a robust phase of expansion in this segment. Over the past 30 months, more than 140 greenfield GCCs have been established across the country, according to research from HR consultancy firm Xpheno. These centres collectively planned for approximately 70,000 new job positions, with individual GCCs targeting anywhere between 50 to 3,000 roles
Mid-Market GCC Landscape
A recent Nasscom-Zinnov report highlights that India currently hosts over 480 mid-market GCCs, employing around 210,000 professionals. These mid-market GCCs are typically set up by mid-sized firms with annual revenues ranging from $100 million to $1 billion. Representing 27% of all GCCs and 22% of total GCC units in India, this segment has seen rapid growth, with more than 110 new facilities established in the last five years alone. This growth accounts for roughly 35% of all new GCC units opened in India during this period
Although mid-market GCCs operate on a smaller scale compared to larger GCCs, they match their counterparts in delivering high-quality services and driving innovation
Future Outlook and Geographic Origins
Research by Bengaluru- and US-based ANSR projects that India will see over 120 new mid-market GCCs by 2026. The majority of these mid-tier centres originate from North America, which accounts for about 60% of the new establishments. Europe contributes approximately 25%, with Germany, the UK, Ireland, Spain, and France being the leading countries. The Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Singapore, makes up the remaining 10%.
Notable mid-market GCC entrants in India over the past 2-3 years include companies such as Revolut, Papa John’s, Raksul, and Outbrain
Preferred Locations and Talent Availability
Mid-market GCCs are predominantly located in India’s tier-1 cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune. According to Kedar Pathak, GCC talent specialist at Xpheno, tier-1 cities offer superior access to a diverse talent pool, advanced skill sets, and robust infrastructure. Although tier-2 cities are being developed to accommodate future growth, they currently remain secondary choices for new GCC setups.
Evolution of GCCs
Modern GCCs in India have evolved beyond being mere technological hubs. They now encompass a broad spectrum of business operations, driving innovation and high-quality service delivery across various sectors.
