German Companies Pivot to India: A New Era for GCCs

For decades, American companies have dominated the outsourcing of IT services and the establishment of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India. But the tide is turning. German firms, once hesitant to venture beyond the European Union, are now staking their claim in India’s booming tech ecosystem.

Industry giants like Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, Siemens, Deutsche Bank, and Continental have set up expansive GCCs across India. What began as cost-effective back-office hubs has evolved into something far more significant. Today, these centers spearhead global projects, driving innovation in cutting-edge technologies and redefining their role in the corporate landscape
The Mittelstand Takes Notice
India’s appeal isn’t limited to corporate behemoths. The German Mittelstand—the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that power Germany’s economy—is also turning its gaze eastward. Achim Burkart, consul general at the German Consulate in Bengaluru, notes a shift in perception. “There were a lot of prejudices about this country, which made it challenging to attract companies here. But today, India is very much on the minds of German businesses,” he says.

The German government is doubling down on this momentum, organizing high-level delegations to strengthen trade ties. Notable partnerships, like Lufthansa’s collaboration with Infosys to establish a GCC and BMW’s joint venture with Tata Technologies for automotive software and IT solutions, underscore this growing interest.

Why India? A Competitive Edge

A recent survey by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and KPMG reveals a striking trend: German companies are increasingly drawn to India. While only 17% cited GCCs and talent availability as investment drivers initially, that figure is projected to soar to 35% by 2029. Cost savings remain a factor, but other advantages are taking center stage:
Stefan Halusa, director general of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, highlights this shift: “India is no longer just a cost-saving destination—it’s a strategic partner for innovation and growth.”

A Win-Win Partnership

The rise of GCCs benefits both nations. German companies tap into India’s skilled workforce, competitive costs, and expanding market, while India gains investment, jobs, and expertise. Recent moves, like Bavaria’s 40-member defence and aerospace delegation visiting India in April, signal even deeper collaboration ahead.

The Road Ahead

India’s transformation from an outsourcing hub to a global innovation powerhouse is undeniable—and German businesses are taking note. As GCCs evolve into centers of value and creativity, the Indo-German partnership is poised to reach new heights. This isn’t just a trend; it’s a tectonic shift in global business dynamics.
