US-based insurer The Standard has established a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Bengaluru, marking its first such centre outside the United States. The move is part of the company’s long-term digital transformation strategy and aims to strengthen its in-house technology capabilities.
Focus on AI, Engineering, and Product Innovation
The Bengaluru GCC will focus on advanced areas including artificial intelligence, software engineering, enterprise platforms, data systems, and product design. The centre is designed to support innovation-driven work rather than traditional outsourcing or maintenance services.
Shift from Outsourcing to Strategic Capability Building
CEO Dan McMillan highlighted that the GCC represents a shift in approach. He emphasized that teams in India will design and build solutions, contributing directly to business outcomes instead of handling routine system operations.
Flexible Growth Model Without Fixed Hiring Targets
The company currently has around 200 employees in India, including those added through the acquisition of Allstate’s Employer Voluntary Benefits business. The GCC will follow a flexible scaling model, with hiring aligned to business needs rather than fixed targets.
Leadership and Integration with Core Business Functions
The India operations are led by Mohua Sengupta. The centre is structured to remain closely integrated with global business functions. A “two-in-a-box” leadership model will pair leaders in India and the US to drive collaboration and alignment.
AI and Data Systems as Key Focus Areas
A major priority for the GCC will be strengthening data organization and utilization, especially in the context of legacy systems. The company aims to enhance its AI capabilities and improve data-driven decision-making across the enterprise.
Conclusion
The launch of The Standard’s Bengaluru GCC reflects a strategic shift toward innovation-led, in-house capability building, positioning India as a key hub for advanced technology, AI, and business-critical operations.
