Pune Emerges as a Key Hub for Global Capability Centers (GCCs)

Pune is rapidly positioning itself as a leading destination for Global Capability Centers (GCCs), driven by strong infrastructure, a skilled workforce, coordinated industry efforts, and supportive public policy. The message came through clearly at an international GCC conference organised by the Maratha Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) in Pune.
GCC Growth & Strategic Importance
Senior government officials and industry leaders highlighted Pune’s growing significance as a global center for industrial expansion and GCCs. The city’s IT and manufacturing corridors, including Hinjewadi and Chakan, are seen as key enablers of large-scale investment and multinational capability centers.
Dr. P. Velrasu, CEO of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), emphasised the state’s GCC potential, noting plans for 400 new capability centers over the next five years and ongoing infrastructure development to support this growth.
Strengths Driving GCC Expansion
Officials pointed to several factors that make Pune an attractive GCC hub:
  • A highly skilled talent pool and nearly five lakh graduates annually
  • Affordable housing and quality office space
  • A conducive business environment with continued ease-of-doing-business reforms
  • The city’s balanced growth strategy, blending IT, manufacturing, and innovation sectors
These advantages have helped Pune become home to about 24–25% of India’s GCCs, with around 400 centers currently operational. Punekar News
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram highlighted Pune’s long-standing leadership as an IT hub, helped by early ecosystem groundwork laid over 25 years ago.
Infrastructure & Future Planning
Investment in transport and communication infrastructure is a priority. Kaustubh Dhavse, Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister’s Office on Investment and Strategy, announced plans to improve these systems over the next 18 months, reinforcing the case for Pune as a future GCC capital.
Expanding Beyond Traditional Corridors
The state government envisions GCC expansion beyond Pune and Mumbai, extending to cities like Nagpur and Nashik, and into sectors beyond technology and finance. Emerging policies in areas such as electric vehicle infrastructure and bamboo industry development are expected to further strengthen Maharashtra’s growth trajectory.
Conclusion
Pune’s blend of infrastructure readiness, academic excellence, industrial strength, and collaborative public-private initiatives positions it as a key hub for Global Capability Centers in India. With strong momentum and targeted policy support, the city is well on its way to attracting further global investment and scaling its role in the country’s enterprise ecosystem.
