Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday inaugurated American firm Equinix’s new data centre near Chennai, reinforcing the state’s growing appeal as a global hub for technology infrastructure. He was joined by State Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa, senior government officials, and company representatives at the launch ceremony.
The data centre, set up at a cost of ₹574 crore ($65 million), is located in the SIPCOT IT Park at Siruseri. This project marks a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu’s digital infrastructure growth, arriving at a time when several multinational firms are expanding their Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and data centres across India.
Headquartered in the United States, Equinix is a leading digital infrastructure company that provides advanced connectivity solutions to businesses worldwide. The Chennai facility is designed to support Artificial Intelligence-driven applications and next-generation technologies, adding to the company’s global network of data centres.
The foundation stone for this project was laid during the Tamil Nadu Investors’ Meet in July 2022, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government.
According to official data, Tamil Nadu recorded a growth rate of 11.19% in the Government of India’s revised 2024–25 GDP estimate—the highest in the country. This marks the state’s return to double-digit growth after 14 years. The government has set an ambitious target of becoming a $1 trillion economy by the end of this decade, with investments in technology and infrastructure expected to play a key role.
