State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty today inaugurated the bank’s first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in SBI’s strategy to enhance its global operations and technology-driven service delivery. At the same event, SBI also launched 11 new branches across the city, further expanding its retail footprint.
First-of-its-Kind GCC by an Indian Bank
The newly inaugurated Global Capability Centre represents a first-of-its-kind initiative by any Indian bank and is aimed at supporting the rapidly growing GCC ecosystem in India — a segment that includes offshore units of multinational companies handling technology, analytics, finance and other strategic business functions.
To specifically cater to this segment’s needs, SBI has also established a dedicated relationship management team in Bengaluru focused on the banking and financial requirements of capability centres operating in the region.
Expansion of SBI’s Physical Presence
Alongside the GCC launch, Chairman Setty inaugurated 11 new SBI branches in Bengaluru in the presence of senior SBI officials including Joohi Smita Sinha, Chief General Manager of the Bengaluru Circle. These new branches are part of SBI’s broader strategy to deepen customer reach and enhance service accessibility in one of India’s most dynamic metropolitan markets.
Community and CSR Initiatives
In addition to business expansion, SBI announced a series of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aligned with community development and welfare:
- Upgradation of 35 government primary schools across Karnataka.
- Provision of ENT diagnostic and therapeutic equipment for the Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital’s ENT wing at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Medical School.
- A 50,000-tree plantation drive at the Tumkur University campus.
- Donation of an E-Ambulance to the Madras Engineer Group & Centre in Bengaluru, an engineering regiment of the Indian Army.
Significance and Broader Context
Bengaluru is widely recognised as one of India’s leading hubs for Global Capability Centres, with continued corporate interest in technology-led operations and innovation. This trend aligns with projections that India’s GCC ecosystem — already one of the largest globally — is set for further expansion in coming years.
SBI’s launch of its own GCC, along with enhanced branch operations, reflects its dual focus on digital transformation and customer-centric growth, positioning the bank to support both domestic and global clients more effectively.
