Airbnb Eyes India as Next Growth Engine, Expands Ambitions Beyond Stays

Airbnb Inc. is setting its sights firmly on India as it expands beyond home rentals to become a one-stop destination for global travel services. Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky described India as a “big bet” for the company and a future growth engine, as rising incomes and rapid digital adoption reshape how Indians travel.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Chesky revealed that Airbnb’s vision now extends far beyond short-term rentals. The San Francisco-based travel giant aims to become the “Amazon for travel services,” integrating independent hotels, tours, and activities onto its platform to capture a larger share of the global travel economy.
“India could soon become one of our biggest markets,” Chesky said, highlighting the country’s booming middle class and growing appetite for diverse travel experiences. The company plans to onboard independent hotels and boutique stays to broaden its inventory and appeal to a wider consumer base.
While Airbnb’s core home-rental business remains strong, Chesky noted that its Experiences segment—offering local tours, workshops, and activities—is expanding faster and will be central to the company’s future strategy.
Chesky also reflected on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) across industries, calling it both a major opportunity and a potential disruptor for travel technology. “AI valuations are frothy, but the long-term impact of AI on technology and travel is underappreciated,” he said, adding that companies ignoring AI risk being left behind.
Looking ahead, Airbnb aims to deepen its global footprint and strengthen its brand as an integrated travel platform—bridging accommodations, experiences, and services under one digital roof. With India at the heart of this vision, Airbnb’s next chapter could redefine how millions across the world plan and experience travel.
